December 11th, Celebrate International Mountain Day! Tomorrow, December 12th, holds a special significance as it represents the elevation of Dongyanshan, 1,212 meters.
Mountains, the abode of 15% of the world’s population, hold half of the globe’s biodiversity hotspots and provide essential freshwater for half of humanity. Yet, human presence in these landscapes can lead to environmental degradation, pollution, soil erosion, and habitat loss. International Mountain Day urges us to deepen our understanding of the ecological importance of mountains and take action to protect these vital areas.
We can follow the “Leave No Trace” principles when entering mountainous to minimize our impact. Planting deep-rooted trees in exposed areas helps solidify soil, while addressing issues of water and soil conservation is crucial for safeguarding the beauty of our mountains.
