Fireflies are known as "火焰蟲" (huǒ yàn chóng) in the Hakka language and "火金姑" (huǒ jīn gū) in Taiwanese. Dongyanshan(Mountain Dongyan) holds the annual event called the "Firefly Legend" in April and May, where people can observe fireflies and other forest creatures at night and learn about the forest's ecology.
Contrary to popular belief, fireflies can be seen year-round, as different species have different habitats, altitudes, and periods of occurrence. For example, the 𝙇𝙪𝙘𝙞𝙤𝙡𝙖 𝙠𝙖𝙜𝙞𝙖𝙣𝙖 Matsumura , 𝙇𝙪𝙘𝙞𝙤𝙡𝙖 𝙘𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙖 Oliver , and 𝘼𝙗𝙨𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙙𝙞𝙩𝙖 𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙣𝙨𝙞𝙨 are abundant in April and May in Dongyanshan.
#DayAndNight
Fireflies can be divided into diurnal, nocturnal, and crepuscular based on their activity times. For example, 𝙋𝙮𝙧𝙤𝙘𝙤𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙖 𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙢𝙤𝙨𝙖𝙣𝙖 is diurnal. Fireflies undergo complete metamorphosis, with four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The larval stage is the longest, lasting up to ten months, while the adult stage lasts only around 20 days.
#Shining
Fireflies emit light for various reasons. Adults use light for communication and mating, while larvae use light for illumination and warning. Different species emit different types of light, which can be used to identify them. For example, the light of 𝙇𝙪𝙘𝙞𝙤𝙡𝙖 𝙘𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙖 Oliver is predominantly green, while the light of 𝙇𝙪𝙘𝙞𝙤𝙡𝙖 𝙥𝙧𝙖𝙚𝙪𝙨𝙩𝙖 is dim orange.
#PassHopeDown
Fireflies are an indicator species that thrive in clean, unpolluted environments. However, human activities such as land destruction, herbicide use, water pollution, and light pollution can threaten their survival. To protect these magical creatures, it is essential to preserve their habitats and refrain from disturbing them while enjoying their beauty.
